Our Stone

Big Creek quarries our own buff limestone blocks. These are sawn into slabs of standard thickness that typically take one of two paths. Frequently, a hydraulic press is utilized to break the slabs into a classic split face veneer. Otherwise, slabs are further sawn into specific dimensions to create sills, coping, panels, or custom size.

Big Creek Quarries

We extract limestone from an open pit in the Earth. The top rock is blasted and stripped away to access the high quality buff limestone for which southern Indiana is known. Blocks of limestone are removed from the bedrock using a combination of sawing techniques and heavy machinery. Big Creek does not sell or distribute blocks; all the blocks we quarry are implemented in further production.

Big Creek Mills

The limestone blocks from our quarry are transported to our mills for further processing. A continuous vertical belt saw cuts through each block from top to bottom, producing slabs in standard thicknesses. As with our blocks, Big Creek does not sell or distribute slabs; every slab is used in-house for subsequent fabrication.

After being sawn into slabs, our stone typically follows one of two primary production paths. Many head to the hydraulic breakers, applying controlled pressure to split the stone along its natural bed to produce split face veneer with a rugged, textured surface (see finishes). Choice slabs are selected to be further sawn into smooth sills, coping, and panels.

Each step of our process emphasizes precision and consistency, ensuring that every finished product reflects the strength and character of genuine Indiana limestone.
